Amazon.co.uk Review Remember that scene in Jerry Maguire where the title character suddenly realises the foolhardiness of his impulsively written manifesto? That's how director Alan Parker (The Commitments, Fame) ought to feel every day of his life since making this dopey, 1976 musical featuring an all-kid cast playing Prohibition-era gangsters and molls. What was Parker thinking? The cuteness of the concept never did hold up for more than 10 minutes, but the film extends it impossibly into a feature. Jodie Foster is on hand, lip-synching a Paul Williams song (Williams wrote the score), but even she can't detract from the film's overall silliness. It's a toss-up as to whether children will enjoy watching it, since the characters and the milieu are based on adult situations. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

My daughter's school recently put on a production of this story, and we decided to buy it as I had not seen it for years. I was pleased to know that you didn't have to have the subtitles on as that would have been annoying for the whole film. We thoroughly enjoyed it and then re-watched the songs with the words and sang along. I felt the film was as fresh as when it was released all those years ago and my daughter loved it watching it for the first time. A great family film, that has stood the test of time.
Poor soundtrack? WHAT?!? May 2, 2006 R. Cook (UK) 43 out of 44 found this review helpful
Not so much a review (it's an excellent film - 'nuff said) but more a comeback to the laughable review by Amazon.
"Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams' score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes."
What? No memorable tunes? Bugsy Malone has one of the most famous movie soundtracks of all time.
The Amazon reviewer who introduced this item should hang his head in shame and seriously reconsider whether he is actually capable in his job.

I recently bought the DVD and I have to say it is one of the most cleverly written musicals ever. I was recently in a stage production of the show, and on the last night of the show, all cast members sat down to watch the original version. The acting was miles better than ours! I would definitely recommend this film, particularly young children. Young boys will enjoy all the different gangsters such as Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, while young girls will love the character of Tallulah the show-girl. 10 out of 10.
As good as I remember... June 8, 2009 Mr. A. C. Davies 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Well, to start I have to say how happy I am with the speed of delivery on this item. I had it literally next day.
The item arrived in excellent condition, no dents or scratches.
This is an excellent film for kids, family or nostalgia. I bought it for my daughter as she is performing in a stage adaptation of the film at her school. Also, this is one of my wife's favourite films.
This is the sing-a-long edition, which means you get 'karaoke style' words appear on your TV screen during the main songs of the film. This feature, however, can be switched off within the DVD menu to allow for normal viewing. Perfect if you have budding budding actress in the house.
If this film is your sort of thing and you're thinking of buying a copy, then I would highly recommend this edition.
Fantastic-a great one for the kids! August 9, 2006 Mrs. A. L. Parsons (UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter as she was acting in her school production of it.Wow,what a great bit of harmless family entertainment. The story is based on gangster warfare between two rival groups with loads of custard pie throwing! The child actors are absolutely brilliant and the songs, what can I say? There are so many memorable tunes that I found myself singing them for days afterwards. My daughter has watched the film constantly and doesn't seem to tire of it.She loves having the subtitles on,so that she can singalong with all the tunes perfectly!!A must for all young budding singers/actors!
