Sony drops proprietary eBook format

PRS-6001_lgKnowing which eBooks to buy should get easier after Sony announced it’s to convert its eBook store to the industry-standard EPUB format by the end of this year and stop selling titles in its own proprietary ebook format.

“Our intention is to lead by example,” said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. “Our Readers have long supported industry-standard formats such as EPUB and PDF. Now, what is quickly becoming the de facto standard for eBooks will be available in our store.”

Both Sony’s existing PRS-505 reader and recently announced new models already support the EPUB format, however until now the company has sold

The company says it will provide an update path for owners of the first edition Reader, model PRS-500, to ensure early adopters of the Reader will be able to read the EPUB titles.
