Report: Kindle faces competition from iPhone

0609iphone3g_frontApple’s iPhone is likely to be “a significant player” in the eBook sector according to a recent report from market research firm Flurry.

The device has already made its presence as a gaming platform felt and now it looks set to trouble Amazon’s Kindle – only recently released for non-US users – and other dedicated eBook readers.

Flurry noted that in September more eBook applications were uploaded to the App Store than games, the first time this has happened.

The organisation says the rise in the number of eBooks available to iPhone users “indicates that Apple is positioned take market share from the Amazon Kindle” and warns Apple’s rumoured tablet device will see existing eBook reader manufacturers facing “significant competition” from Apple.
